PART II, SECTION 5– UNDERSTANDING SPECIFIC ESC RIGHTS

USING MODULE 15 INA TRAINING PROGRAM

The Right to A Healthy Environment

GO TO SECTION I - MODULE 15

The purpose of Module 15 is to provide an overview of the right to a healthy environment.

This module should help trainees understand/clarify for themselves:

  • the history of the development of the right;
  • relevant international and national standards; and
  • implementation and enforcement mechanisms at the international and national levels.

Suggested Methods

¨      Lecture presentation: Based on the module, a lecture presentation could be given clarifying the concept of the right to a healthy environment.  Alternatively, a group working on environmental issues could be asked to describe how they are dealing with environmental issues from a rights perspective.

¨      Preparation of a petition: A facilitator could provide a case in which people are affected as a result of environmental damages.  Working in small groups, the participants should prepare a petition stating the case of affected people by using the argument that they have a right to a clean and healthy environment.
