PART II, SECTION 5– UNDERSTANDING SPECIFIC ESC RIGHTS

USING MODULE 12 IN A TRAINING PROGRAM

The Right to Adequate Food

GO TO SECTION I - MODULE 12

The purpose of Module 12 is to provide an overview of the right to food.

This module should help trainees understand/clarify for themselves:

  • international standards related to the right to adequate food and its relationship to other rights; and
  • the state’s obligations with respect to the right to food under international and national law; and
  • implementation and enforcement mechanisms.

Suggested Methods

¨      Lecture presentation: A facilitator could make a lecture presentation summarizing the main points contained in the module.  The presentation should clarify the concept of the right to food and how it is linked to other ESC rights.

¨      Story writing based on a picture of a starving woman: A facilitator could display a picture of a man or woman.  Working in small groups, participants should write a short story about the depicted person.  The story should be regarding accessibility or availability of food for that person.  It is not necessary that the picture depict deprivation.

Each group should read their story to the whole group.  The facilitator should list the factors relating to accessibility or availability of food identified in the stories, and then lead a discussion on how these factors could be addressed so that the person could enjoy her right to food.  The discussion should lead to the question of identifying obligations of states as well as other entities in ensuring the enjoyment of the right to food.
