USING MODULE 20 IN A TRAINING PROGRAM

EDUCATION FOR EMPOWERMENT - SOME REFLECTIONS

GO TO SECTION I - MODULE 20

The purpose of Module 20 is to provide a perspective on human rights education and to suggest ways to develop creative education program for the advancement of ESC rights.

This module should help trainees understand/clarify for themselves:

  • the importance of developing a perspective on education before embarking on conducting educational programs;
  • how educational practices can diminish as well as enhance a person’s dignity;
  • elements of an educational program for a rights-based approach; and
  • some ideas for conducting a creative human rights education program.

Suggested Methods

This module should be presented in a creative way to stress the point that human rights education should be a creative process.

¨      Discussion of the song: The song reproduced in the module should be discussed by the participants either in small groups or all together.  The discussion should help clarify the point that education is not a neutral enterprise.

¨      Brainstorming on education for enhancing dignity: In the next step, participants should brainstorm on the elements of an educational practice that would enhance dignity.  A trainer should summarize the main points contained in the module.

¨      Identifying some creative methods: Finally, participants should identify creative methods, based on their experience, for conducting human rights education programs.  The identification of creative methods should be an active process with the participants sharing information about methods they have used and the whole group trying them out during the session.
